Different mechanisms generate transient ICP elevations. Sleep apnea generates a significant proportion of transient ICP elevations, followed by irregular breathing with altered thoracic and abdominal movement. However, during reduced compliance, often seen by pathologically high ICP > 20 mmHg, transient ICP elevations are generated by slow oscillating changes in the autonomic system (ANS) reflected in the cardiovascular system
