Panels B, D, F, H, J, L represent the data obtained in the presence or in the absence of cytokines during anoxia, while panels A, C, E, G, I, and K represent the data obtained in the corresponding control groups. The M1 phenotype-specific cytokines (TNFα, IL-12, IL-6) and M2 phenotype-specific cytokines (TGFβ and IL-4), but not IL-10, exerted protective effects on astrocytes during anoxia. Data are presented as mean ± SEM from 4–6 separate primary cultures of astrocytes, * = p < 0.05, ** = P < 0.01 with cytokines versus control.
