Each row of figures presents data as observations made across the shunt catheter holes encased in the alginate gel (a, b), and holes outside of the gel (c, d). Morphology was scored by cell organization (single round cells, cell clusters, large cells, cell sheets and cells spanning shunt catheter holes). Data are presented as the total percent of shunts observed with each morphologic characteristic (n = 4), where the percentages are not mutually exclusive. Cell viability is scored by normalized fluorescent signal visualized using a live/dead cytotoxicity assay. The percent of viable cells out of the total cells is expressed above each time interval
