Erlend A. Nagelhus, M.D., Ph.D. is a Professor of Medicine (Physiology) at the Department of Molecular Medicine, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Oslo. He received his Ph.D. from University of Oslo and did postdoctoral training at University of Oslo and University of Rochester, New York. From 2009 he was group leader at the Centre for Molecular Medicine Norway, The Nordic EMBL Partnership, University of Oslo. His research focuses on the roles of astrocytes in brain water and ion homeostasis, and neuro-glio-vascular signaling. Studies have included investigations of 1) the distribution and physiological roles of aquaporin-4 water channels and Kir4.1 potassium channels, 2) glial Ca2+ signaling, and 3) barrier functions of glial endfeet. His laboratory uses in vivo two-photon imaging in combination with electrophysiology.
